FedEx promises: carbon neutral operation will be realized in 2040.

Time:2021-03-14 Views:133
FedEx Group recently announced that by 2040, it will achieve carbon neutral operations for its global business. FedEx Group owns one of the world‘s largest cargo airlines. To achieve this goal, FedEx will invest more than $2 billion in initial capital in three key areas: vehicle electrification, sustainable energy, and carbon sequestration. This includes donating US$100 million to Yale University to help it establish the Yale University Natural Carbon Capture Center in the United States to accelerate research on large-scale carbon sequestration methods. The initial focus is to help offset the greenhouse gas emissions currently produced by airlines.Frederick W. Smith, Chairman and CEO of FedEx Group, said: “We have a responsibility to take bold action to address climate challenges. Our goal is based on a long-term commitment to the sustainable development of all of the company’s businesses, and at the same time Invest in FedEx and long-term transformation solutions for our entire industry."

The key steps to achieve the goal of carbon neutrality include:
Vehicle electrification: By 2040, FedEx‘s delivery fleet will all use zero-emission electric vehicles. This will be accomplished by replacing existing vehicles in phases. For example, by 2025, 50% of FedEx‘s new global purchases will be electric vehicles, and by 2030, this proportion will increase to 100%.
Sustainable customer solutions: FedEx will work with customers to provide end-to-end sustainable services for customers‘ supply chains through carbon-neutral transportation and sustainable packaging solutions.
Sustainable fuels: FedEx will continue to invest in alternative fuels to reduce carbon emissions from aircraft and vehicles.
Fuel saving and aircraft modernization: The FedEx Fuel Sense program has been a success, and FedEx will continue to build on this foundation to reduce aircraft fuel consumption. Since 2012, the FedEx Fuel Sense program and the aircraft modernization program have saved 1.43 billion gallons of aircraft fuel and avoided more than 13.5 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions.
Operating facilities: FedEx will continue to make more than 5,000 operating facilities around the world more sustainable by continuously investing in high-efficiency facilities, renewable energy and other energy management projects.
Natural carbon sequestration: FedEx will fund the establishment of the Yale University Natural Carbon Capture Center to support the application of natural carbon sequestration solutions.
The road to sustainable development requires innovative strategies to remove and store excess carbon on the planet. The Natural Carbon Capture Center at Yale University will promote interdisciplinary research in the fields of natural science and engineering, and strive to accelerate this work.
On the basis of natural carbon storage systems (including biological ecosystems and geological carbon cycles), the center‘s researchers will develop new methods to improve carbon absorption speed, capacity and storage time as much as possible. Scientists at Yale University aim to use these efforts to establish a combined carbon removal strategy that can have a global impact.
On the basis of the initial success in the aviation field, the center will publish and share its research results so that companies, industries and governments can benefit from it, accelerate the adoption and implementation of the global natural carbon capture strategy, thereby expanding the scope of influence and helping More global emission sources solve the carbon emission problem.
Carl W. Yale School of Environment Knobloch Jr. Dean Dr. Ingrid C. "Indy" Burke said: "Addressing climate change is a complex challenge that requires immediate action. The natural carbon capture strategy will be a key part of this initiative. The Yale University Natural Carbon Capture Center The establishment aims to develop a measurable carbon capture strategy to help offset global carbon emissions."

FedEx’s commitment is built on its history of implementing sustainable development strategies. Since 2009, the company‘s efforts have reduced the company‘s overall carbon dioxide emission intensity by approximately 40%, while the number of packages has increased by 99% during the same period. Recently, FedEx ranked first in the industry in the 2021 "America‘s Most Just Companies" environmental list released by JUST Capital. In the list of "The Most Responsible Companies in America in 2021" published by Newsweek, FedEx ranks first in the fields of travel, transportation and logistics.
Mitch Jackson, Chief Sustainability Officer of FedEx Group, said: “Although we have made tremendous progress in reducing our environmental impact, we must do more. The long-term healthy development of our industry is directly related to the health of the planet. This One effort goes beyond the profit and loss of the company, and there is no choice. At FedEx, we are committed to connecting people with all possibilities through abundant resources and responsible methods. The measures we take today will have a positive impact on future generations. .
